Human Anatomy: the Painted Body and its application in (your) Art ( with Professor Paul McMenamin from the department of Anatomy and Human Biology, UWA and eminent WA artist Hans Arkeveld)

This 7-week series will cover: (1) the skeletal basis of human form. Painting by participants of the position of the major skeletal structures onto a life model, highlighting where the skeleton lies close to the surface. Presentation would focus on bony landmarks, joints, movement at joints, range of movement of the major joints (shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle, back). (2) Figure drawing : studying a life model (male well muscled) focussing on contours, ridges, etc and their underlying anatomical structure. (3) The muscular basis ( upper torso down to waist level ) of human anatomical form: Participants will paint on a life model whilst learning about the major muscles that cause the contours, ridges and surface markings. (4) The muscular basis ( lower limb to hip region ) of human anatomical form. Body painting continued. (5) The skeletal and muscular basis of the form of the head and neck . Anatomy of the features including: eyelids, nose, cheek, mouth, and ears. (6-7) How might you apply this new knowledge of human anatomy to your own art? Exploring the architecture of expression and a look at how artists throughout history have altered the expressions of their figures (from Goya's tense and tormented souls to Rubens' serene beings) by manipulating muscles, tendons and poise. Highly respected West Australian artist Hans Arkeveld has worked alongside anatomists for over 30 years and his artwork demonstrates the importance he gives to the study of anatomy for all figurative representation. The evening will comprise of part lecture and/or demonstration, possibly some painting on a live model, plus a practical drawing exercise. This course will be of great value to professional artists, art students and non-artists equally.
