Kidogo Institute was founded by Irish Artist, Joanna Robertson in 1993. It was previously known as "Creative Courses".
Joanna has taught at Art Colleges in Ireland, the U.S.A and Australia. Her interest in "how art students learn", and how to teach them took her to visit art schools in China, Africa, England, France, Malaysia and Denmark.
The basis of her philosophy is that art students should be taught in a living, working art space, at Kidogo Arthouse there are two galleries with new exhibitions every few weeks. Art students at Kidogo Arthouse have the opportunity to meet and observe professional artists at work.
Bigger institutions demand that artists spend a lot of time doing paperwork. At Kidogo Institute administrative tasks are not handled by the lecturing artists so the artists are freed up to put all their energy and ideas into teaching the students.
This policy, as well as the stunning art studio setting on Bathers' Beach in Fremantle, has enabled Kidogo Institute to attract W.A.'s most interesting artists, who would have no interest otherwise in working for a Tertiary Institution.
Joanna Robertson did her five year Degree at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland. She has exhibited in over 50 exhibitions around the world.
Because of Joanna's background as a professional, exhibiting artist she has focussed on developing an art school environment that is really suited to being creative in.
