Learn about: Planning a composition for an oil painting; referencing ideas of the Old Masters; preparing the painting surface properly; studying the proportions of the human figure; translating a composition to a canvas; building up the paint layers; mixing colours accurately (particularly flesh tones) and applying glazes. This intensive course will follow an old fashioned, Academic approach to oil painting. A material list will be supplied.

The new course has been developed for people who would like to do an intensive course with Ian de Souza and learn to quickly complete a work. How to judge when a piece is finished? What visual information to include and ignore when confronted with a complex subject; You need to be prepared to work hard. The results will be an increased working pace, and increased confidence in decision-making, composition, drawing, tone, colour, and paint application. Over the three days you will work through a series of set exercises, applied to one pose, using a range of materials/surfaces. Each exercise begins with an amazing demonstration accompanied by discussion on the qualities of different materials. This is not a beginner's course and is designed for students who have practiced art previously.
