Painting: Oils, Acrylics and/or Mixed Media

The aim of this course is to enable you to develop your own style in painting by studying the techniques of a wide range of artists. You will be shown the best techniques and practices of painting with oils or acrylics. Learn: how to create an excellent composition; build up a painting in lean to fat layers; assess when a painting is complete; which glazes and framing methods would be most appropriate to "finish" the painting.

Painting: Mixed Media & Abstraction with Fran Rhodes

Fran will teach an approach to abstraction which relies on the same principles of balance, proportion, colour use and composition as does figurative painting. You will start with discussing the origin and development of abstraction and its place in contemporary art and society. Fran will share her own approach to abstract image making as something derived from a process of observation and reduction of real things and places. You will be encouraged to explore the abstract representation of three-dimensional space and to work up several style of pieces so as to be better able to assess and compare methods of representation and find their own styles of abstraction.

Fran Rhodes completed her M.A. in Contemporary Visual Arts at England's famous Falmouth College of  Arts in 2002 and has exhibited widely since then.

The Weather: How to express it in Different Mediums

How do you paint an approaching storm? A sweltering hot day? This course is about understanding the difference in capturing the elements of weather in an expressive way through paint and/or mixed media, rather than doing a routine depiction of a scene. Hone your "feel" for paint and painting light.
