Joanna Robertson is an internationally exhibited artist with fifteen years experience in lecturing and assessing portfolios for art colleges in Europe and Australia. She is a graduate of The National College of Art and Design, Dublin and spent two years as an Artist-in-Residence in North Carolina, prior to moving to Perth in 1989. Joanna's research into tertiary entry requirements around the world includes visits to art & design departments in colleges in Eastern and Western Australia, The USA, England, Ireland, France, Africa, Singapore, Malaysia and China. She has lectured in art and design in three countries. Joanna was the winner of the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce's "1998 Entrepreneur of the Year Award" and finalist in the "Telstra Business Woman of the Year Award" in both 1998 and 1999.
 



Rick Allen has had an extraordinarily varied culinary life since completing his four year cooking apprenticeship in Victoria. First he worked as a chef at the prestigious hotel resort, Wangaratta, known as the French-Australian Gateway and then as a cold larder chef for the Victoria Hotel, Perth. More recently he was the head chef at a West Australian landmark, Settlers House, York and currently works for a prominent, award winning catering company. Rick is also starting a business where he teaches people in their own kitchens how to cook and prepare food. His motto is, "simple things, well done".
 
 



Hans Arkeveld is one of West Australia's most respected artists. In 1992 the Lawrence Wilson Gallery honoured him with a solo retrospective show. His work is in all the major collections, including the National Gallery of Australia. The West Australian Newspaper's senior art critic, David Bromfield describes Arkeveld as having "an enviable reputation for fine craftsmanship and deserves the title of the states senior sculptor" (12/9/92).
 



Rui Zhi Bian is a Chinese master artist and graduate of The Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. After being repeatedly the top student at the Academy, Master Bian was invited to become a full-time specialist artist for the Chinese Government, working on commissions of famous people, huge public art projects and representing Guangzhou province in national touring art exhibitions.
 
 



 
 

Slobodan Binevski studied painting at the University for Fine Art in Skopje, Macedonia. Between 1974 - 90 worked at the Institute for the Protection of Monuments for the Republic of Macedonia, restoring original, medieval icons and frescos in churches and monasteries in remote areas. He is a member of the Society of Professional Visual Artists of the Republic of Macedonia, and still exhibits his paintings over there. He describes his own paintings as "figurative work with medieval aesthetics. I use icon techniques taken from classical and Christian Macedonia art into which I incorporate influences from my Australian environment".
 
 



 
 

Donald Brook is a sculptor and Emeritus Professor (Flinders University, South Australia). He has a world wide reputation as a philosopher on art theory and criticism. His opinions have been sought for publication by journals around the world, including; The Journal of Aesthetics & Art Criticism, The British Journal of Aesthetics, Leonardo, Art Monthly, Artlink, Art in Architecture, Art in Australia and The Australasian Journal of Philosophy. He has devoted time to examining aesthetics, architecture, sculpture and the value of the artist and art institutions to the society. He has lectured at Colchester College of Art (UK), Ahmadu Bello University (Nigeria) and was one of the original four appointments to the Power Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Sydney. Donald has a Fine Art degree from Durham University, a Phd. in Philosophy from ANU and exhibits his large ceramics with Gunyulgup Galleries in Margaret River.



 
 

Julie Brewin is one of the team of 4 running the West Australia School of Distant Education art program. Through this program she tutors Year 11 & 12 TEE art students. She has lectured at tertiary level and worked in Senior Teacher and Head of Department at secondary schools in Australia, Canada and England. Throughout a wide ranging teaching career, Julie has produced and exhibited her own paintings and textiles. She sees her own practice as a designer of direct relevance to her understanding of the individual's learning process.



 

Marjorie Bussey is a painter and printmaker who has exhibited with Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA), The New Collectables Gallery, Gunyulgup Galleries and Gallery Hakuzen (Japan). Two years ago the Art Gallery of Western Australia purchased a series of 9 of her experimental prints. She is currently completing her MFA with the UWS, Nepean.



Dave Carson is a graduate of Canterbury College of Art (UK) and past course leader of the BA Fine Art course at Blackburn College, Lancashire. He has taught for Salford University and the West Australian School of Art & Design. Dave was the chosen 1998 Festival of Perth artist at PICA and is currently Artist-in-Residence with Landcare Vision Inc. funded by the Australia Council for the Arts.



Judy Chambers is a Design graduate of Beckenham School of Art, Kent and The Royal College of Art, London. She has twenty years experience lecturing and exhibiting in England, Jamaica and Australia. She exhibits with Goddard De Fiddes Gallery in Perth.
 
 



Sean Chambers majored in sculpture at Curtin University. Since graduating he has exhibited throughout Western Australia and in the Eastern States. He has recently returned from eighteen months living in Ireland and Spain. He is currently working towards a solo show at the end of the year at Artplace Gallery in Claremont.
 
 



Margaret Chia Oi-Ying is one of the worlds most famous artists using the ancient Chinese artform of Finger Painting. She has exhibited in her home of Singapore and internationally. Last year she exhibited at the Gallery East, in Claremont. Mrs Chia studied this 3,000 year old artform under the grand master of Chinese Finger Painting, Mr. Wu Tsai Yen.



 

Penny Coss moved from Sydney to Perth in 1994 to continue her art practice and lecture for the West Australian School of Art & Design. She is a graduate of the University of NSW and the city Art Institute (Sydney). She had attended further studies in drawing at St. Martins School of Art (London) and was an ARTSWA grant recipient to participate in the 1997 New York School of Art Drawing Marathon (Adelaide) Penny won the 1996 Albany Art Prize, 1997 Kimberley Drawing Prize and the 1997 East Fremantle Art Prize.



Christine Cunningham has an International background in Interior Decorating & Design. In the '70's she worked for respected L.A. Interior Designer, Jules Buccier. In London she worked for John Michael Design specialising in boutique fit outs. Subsequently she has worked on projects ranging from restaurants to hotels, trust houses, resorts and display homes. Her work can be seen in Europe, Nigeria, Italy, Saudi, Western Australia and the Gold Coast. Christine has her own successfully interior design business.



 
 

Ian de Souza is one of WA's most recognised names in figurative drawing. He began to paint seriously at the age of forty. He is attracted to light, movement and the human form. His work reflects a strong emphasis on drawing and has been featured in Art in Australia/ Art & The Asia Pacific Magazines and shows with galleries in Margaret River, Broom, Sydney, Adelaide, Seattle and Subiaco.

Sally Douglas completed her BA in Visual Arts and Crafts at ECU. She is regarded as one of Western Australian's leading watercolourists and has exhibited widely throughout Australia. Her experience with watercolours spans eighteen years. Sally is a member of The Colour Society and was the subject of the educational video, "A Brush with Life". Her work can be seen at Gunyulgup Galleries (Margaret River) and in the New Norcia Art Collection.



 
 

Kathleen Dzubiel is a published writer who has completed tertiary studies in Creative Writing. Her work has been performed in public and on radio across Australia. She has taught creative writing for the Fremantle Art Centre, UWA Extension program and the Fellowship of Australian Writers.
 
 



Julie Yaminga Dowling is a Yamatji artist. She was the first Aboriginal graduate of the Curtin University Fine art program in 1992. The major concerns in her painting focus on bridging two cultures. She was recently featured in the Art Gallery of WA's exhibition of leading WA Aboriginal women artists and represents Australia in major international exhibitions.



 
 

Linda Fardoe studied Fine Art and Theatre Design at Wimbledon School of Art from 1964 -66 and lived and studied in Rheims, France during 1967-68. She taught art in South London for many years before moving to Perth in 1982 and has since had five solo shows. Her works are held in collections in Europe, America and Australia, including the Holmes a Court Collection, Dr Ian Bernardt Collection, Sydney Artbank and the Art Gallery of Western Australia.



Richard Fry has a BA, with distinction, in Ceramics and Glass from Curtin University. He is a well known practicing artist with many solo shows and Public Art commissions to his credit. He has received numerous important art prizes and was chosen to design the 1995 Fremantle Festival Poster. His work is in several major collections including The Art Gallery of Western Australia.



 
 

Catherine Gill (USA) will be visiting Western Australia from the States, in February 1999 to exhibit with Stafford Studios in WA. Cath is known in the Northwest and Alaska for her still life and landscape watercolours, oils and pastels. She shows with the American Watercolour Society in New York and the Women Painters of Washington exhibitions in Germany and Japan. She has given art workshops for the Seattle Art Museum and the Frye Art Museum. This will be her first visit to Australia.



 
 

Matthew Goodlet is recognised as one of WA's leading glass artists. Since setting up Kumara Glass Studios in East Fremantle's George Hotel Art Complex ten years ago, Matthew has gone on to win awards and coveted commissions for his luscious glass designs. His work can be seen in all the major craft exhibitions, Katsui shops, the Craft Council of WA, Exmouth Tourist Centre (front door panel), Leeman Church and of course, Kumara Studios, East Fremantle.



John Greeuw is a practicing artist with a reputation for innovative uses of painting materials and sensitivity for drawing the figure. He is a founding member of the much applauded Verge Gallery in Northbridge. Since graduating from the Fine Art program at Curtin University, he has lectured full time for the West Australian School of Art & Design.
 
 



Andrew Hayim's last solo exhibition was in The Art Gallery of W.A., when he showed the fruits of a project - to paint a painting a day for one year. He undertook a European trip during that time which meant paintings were being worked on in flight, on trains and in stations. Since then he has worked on an enormous 3D project converting his entire property into a massive sculpture.



 
 

Paul Hinchliffe studied art in the UK and WA. He currently lecturers in drawing and art theory at Claremont School of Art. About the workshop that he will give at Kidogo Arthouse in 1999, Paul wrote, "All too often the 'self portrait' confirms it's reality by observing itself from a position of disengagement or even hostility. The self 'performs' as self and is thus represented as someone else. In this Figure Drawing Masterclass I intend to avoid this theatrical attitude to the self portrait and examine some alternative strategies to self representation".



 
 

Nick Horn was the Co-ordinator of the First Year program at the School of Art, Curtin University between 1990 - 97. For many of those years he co-ordinator the School's Drawing program. He now lecturers in Foundation Studies, Visual Fundamentals and Painting at the WA School of Visual Arts at Edith Cowan University. He has exhibited with several prestigious galleries in Perth.



 
 

Rosemary Hunter is an extremely experienced, well known and popular art history lecturer. Recently retired from a long career lecturing for Claremont School of Art, Rosemary focuses most of her time on her own drawing and painting.



 
 

Ben Joel is a painter and Director of Painting/Printmedia at Curtin University's School of Art. He has taught at most of the major tertiary institutes in this state and as a visiting lecturer at colleges in Massachusetts, Texas and Wisconsin, USA. His work is in numerous collections including the AGWA and the National Gallery of Victoria.



 
 

Jeremy Kirwan Ward is a leading local exponent of colour-field painting whose work is notable for its simple, dramatic, geometric slabs of colour. John Stringer, in Artists in Residence, comments that "his paintings are infused with emotion, mood and atmosphere, emphasising spiritual and ethereal qualities that have no discernible relationship with recognisably local motifs".



Theo Koning moved to Australia from Holland in 1953. At aged 24 he was selected for inclusion in the Art Gallery of Western Australia's exhibition "Western Australian Painters and Sculptors". Since then he has had 13 solo shows and currently exhibits with the highly reputable Gallerie Dusseldorf in Perth.
 



Anna Kwiecinska learnt the mosaic techniques that she teaches, at Centro Internazionale di Studi per L'Insegnamento del Mosaico in Ravenna, Italy - a college which specialises in training people in mosaic art techniques. Ravenna is the home of many of the world's most famous mosaics.



 
 

Claudine Lhost trained as an primary education art specialist in Belgium. She is the very well known and popular art teacher from Lance Holt School in Fremantle. Claudine's sensitivity and flair at stimulating the imagination and confidence of young people is demonstrated by the enjoyment that the children get from her classes and the tremendous work that flows from them.



Brian McClave visited Perth from London in March 1999. He is best remembered locally for the amazing 3-D Multimedia work he made for his exhibition "Geoderma" screened at PICA during the 1998 Festival of Perth. Brian has a MFA in multimedia from Rhode Island School of Design in New York where he has since been a lecturer. His main focus at present is on 3-D digital imaging and 3-D digital video. His multimedia film, Circulus (released in 1996) has won awards in the USA and UK. In 1998 Brian designed the 3D displays for the British Museum in London.



Marjan Medhat has spent the last six years training and working as a Floral Artist/Designer in Holland, the world capital of Floral Art. She returned to Perth in July 1996 bringing with her the very latest techniques in the rapidly growing European movement of Contemporary Floral Design.
 
 



 
 

Richard Merito has earned his very high reputation as a lecturer of drawing and sculpture with the incredible energy and skill that he brings to his lessons. He is one of Claremont School of Art's most treasured lecturers and has had a recognised influence on West Australian sculptural practice.



Emi Ninoseki received her MFA in Printmaking from Tokyo National University of Fine Art. This was followed by 18 months post graduate studies at The University of Alberta in Canada. She has 16 years experience exhibiting and demonstrating her art form in Japan, Canada and Australia.



 
 

Danilo Pravica is a painter and printmaker from Mostar (former Yugoslavia). Between 1992-97 Danilo lived in Berlin and founded both the Sued-Ost-Europa-Kultur Art Gallery and the Children's Art Gallery . He has been an Artist-in-Residence in Paris, Berlin and Perth. He has had 41 solo shows and exhibited in over 200 group shows in national and private galleries in former Yugoslavia, Germany, France and Australia.



 
 

Libby Shepard is the originator of the Art & Design course for years 11 and 12. Her work as the Secondary Education Authority's (now the Curriculum Council) Senior State Moderation Officer in charge of the Visual & Performing Arts Curriculum gives her an unmatched insight into the standards achievable.



 
 

Warren Simpson has worked as a professional cartoonist, animator and animation layout-out artist, character designer and storyboard designer for numerous feature films, TV. series and TV. commercials. Amongst the many productions that Warren has worked on are Blinky Bill, Walt Disney's Winnie the Poo, Ren & Skimpy, 2 Stupid Dogs, The Silver Brumby and Screwball Squirrel. He is presently freelancing on the current production of Ginger Meggs.



Daniele Specogna studied Fine Art in the 60's at the Della Salute Academe of Fine Art in Venice. For fifteen years he apprenticed, part-time, with the well known master jeweller, Andrea Ballerani, in Florence. Ballerani, who designed and made jewellery for many of the top names, including, Buccellati, taught Daniele all the rapidly disappearing, ancient, traditional techniques of fine jewellery making. Examples of Daniele's work can be seen at his own showrooms and workshops at 14 Bannister Street, Fremantle.
 
 



Holly Story is a highly respected Australian textile artist/ printmaker. Her approach to textiles is very original as she combines an array of techniques and mixed media (fabric, paint, stitching, printmaking, etc.) to create extraordinary and sensitive art pieces on fabric.



 

Tangea Tansley's lifestyle of travelling the world and living in eleven different countries has taught her the importance of entertaining if you want to make friends and contacts. The dinner parties she devised were so successful that she became inundated with requests to plan other peoples parties. Her flair for entertaining led to her setting up a successful consulting business in Hong Kong and South Africa. Tangea currently lives in Perth.
 



Veronika Vincze has achieved international acclaim for her exceptional skills as a Sound Engineer and Music Director. She received her MA from The Frederyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, Poland. Since 1983 she has been involved in the production of more than four hundred albums and CD's and has recorded for and received significant awards from Hungaroton Recording Company, Budapest, Hungary.
 
 



 
Friederike Weibka is a graduate of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technologies renowned "Gold & Silver Smithing" course. She was awarded a Fellowship Diploma for Gold-smithing from Staatliche Zeichenakademie (Hanau) and worked as a goldsmith in Stuttgart, Detmold and Bad Oeynhausen. Friederike now lives in Fremantle and exhibits with the Crafts Council of WA.



Jill Yelland is an printmaker, designer, business woman, lecturer and publisher with a 20 year career spanning Europe and Australia. She runs her own business writing, designing and publishing books. Her publication "Typo Survival Kit" is now used by design colleges in the USA, Canada, UK, New Zealand, China and Singapore. She is also the author of "The Art of Minding Your Own Business" which has become an important reference book for artists and art managers. Jill is a member of the Design Institute and in 1998 won the West Australian Micro Business Award for " innovative use of technology in small business".
